It’s challenging to live a balanced life in this modern world of ours. It doesn’t take much before we get distracted by the things that should not be of importance to us. As women, we are bombarded with so much expectations that we place on ourselves and those that others have placed on us. We try to live up to this image of a woman who can do it all. Think of all the different roles you have as a woman… daughter, wife, mother, sister, co-worker, boss, friend, or even all of the above. It can get very demanding and sometimes we end up feeling overwhelmed because we are running on empty. We need to rest in the Lord’s presence so that we can be rejuvenated. It is extremely vital for our life because being a daughter of Christ is our identity, and all the other roles are given by Him.
I am sure you have all heard of the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42. Two sisters, who were excited that Jesus came to their home. Mary sat at His feet and enjoyed hearing Him and being in His presence. But Martha was so busy and was distracted with serving Him and getting things done. Martha was upset that Mary wasn’t helping her, but Jesus answered her by saying “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one good thing is needed and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken from her”. He was referring to Mary choosing to sit at His feet as more important than serving.
This can be a great reminder for many of us. To find rest in the Lord is His will for us. You don’t need to run to tangible things to quiet your soul. He wants to refresh you, and wants you to settle down from the busy life you lead. He wants you to enjoy everyday life and have confidence that He will take care of your needs. You will feel revitalized once all the distractions around you are gone, and you make alone time with Him a priority. If you are always on the go, you won’t be able to hear God. A barrier of busyness will be blocking you from Him.
People often confuse busyness and productivity all the time. If what ever you are doing is keeping you from growing spiritually, then it is busyness. The distractions in your life are like weeds from a garden and it fills your mind and heart. It usually is a result of neglect and doesn’t take much time for it to grow. If you neglect your time with God and neglect slowing down and finding true rest in Him, you will eventually see the results. Believe it or not, you will get irritable, critical, judgmental, lack compassion, you will be cranky etc. You enter a state of restlessness and you will try harder to prove yourself through your “works”, “spiritual discipline” or “got it all together” act. But it will all fail because there will be nothing left inside of you to give.
Jesus said come to me all who are burdened and heavy laden and I will give you rest. You are made in a unique way, and you are not made to strive. God did not use a cookie cutter when He made women. We are all unique with different talents, giftings and personalities. Only when you rest in the Lord’s presence and get to know Him more, you will get to know yourself more. And even if you don’t have all the answers to the future, you will still be at rest, because you are confident in the one who created you.
Think about what those distractions are in your own life, that can take away from quality time with your Saviour. Whether its social media, taking on too much because you can’t say no, hobbies, tv or whatever else it may be. I encourage you to take a break from the things that can easily distract you from your time with God. By no means am I suggesting for you to take time away from your roles as women, because those are given by God. But you will be better at those roles when you find rest in God and put Him first. God doesn’t want you to run on empty any longer. He doesn’t want you to crash under the pressures of this world, or the expectations others have placed on you or the expectations you have placed on yourself. He wants to fill you up with His love. The chaos in your life will stand still, and He will cause the storms to cease. Go to Him, He is waiting…. find rest in Him beautiful ones!
