Your Health Matters

New Year’s has come and gone by fast.  At the beginning of every year we all make some serious life-changing resolutions. Whether it gets done or not is another question. The number one common resolution that most people have on their list is to lose weight and maintain a good, healthy lifestyle. There are only a handful of people that are dedicated to losing the weight, staying active and getting healthy over the span of the year.  These people have reaped tremendous health benefits as a result.  However, most of the individuals who start off the year with good intentions struggle to get active and healthy.

It seems as if it’s impossible to the lose weight and to maintain the right body mass weight to have the lifestyle that many women desire.  Our lives have become very busy with our occupations, which stalls all our healthy activities.  As well, the drive-thru food industry has become very popular, which consists of less cooking at home.  Many of us women do not know how take-out food is prepared. Therefore, we do not realize that the added ingredients might be potentially harmful to our bodies. The fast food industry propagates this kind of behavior in order to “make life easy”; which could actually make people lazy, unhealthy and obese. Our daily schedule has become so hectic and busy that it makes it very challenging to stay active. Exercise’s takes up a lot of effort that many are not willing to do.  It takes time and commitment along with a proper diet to live a healthy lifestyle. Otherwise, our health is jeopardized and we can expect many risk factors to our health if not proper care in not taken.  We can expect countless diseases and other sickness when our health is not in the greatest shape.  The number one cause of any disease relies solely on how well you eat, drink, and take care of your body. There is a saying “you are what you eat.”

The fast food we consume has many active toxic ingredients and we don’t see some of the side effects until later in our life. The media likes to portray fast food industry as healthy and convenient. The reality is that it’s actually extremely harmful for your health. Since fast food is convenient, physical activity has decreased dramatically and technology has increased. Everything in today’s world needs to be instantaneous; just as social media gives us information right away, fast food restaurants gives us food right away. Our physical activity has decreased dramatically. Everything is easily accessible to you today within reach.  There is no requirement for you to move around.  Sadly, due to poor health quality, there has been an increase rate in obesity in children and adulthood. The Region of Peel’s recent study is so alarming: “93% of Canadian children and youth do not achieve the minimum level of physical activity necessary to ensure long-term good health and well-being”.

The weight loss or diet industry has become very trendy and popular with new lines of products that guarantee instant weight loss.  The diet products that are out in the market, do not share information of possible health risks. However, there are legitimate diets that have been medically proven to help people.  It is very important that you do your research and consult with your family physician before you try out any diet and exercise plans. Instead of restricting overall food intake, you can adjust your portions and choose your foods wisely. How long can you maintain a diet plan? Diets can get very expensive and can put a strain on your finances with no guarantee for meaningful weight loss.

Your health matters! It’s important that you take every effort to get healthy in the right way.  There is a free and easier way to get healthy, lose weight, strengthen your core, or whatever your aspirations maybe.  Here are three biblical truths that can help you choose healthier habits to living a better life in Christ. Being healthy is important to God.

  1. What you consume

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31

What you consume in your body is very important as it brings glory to God.  We all have desires to serve God in a greater capacity.  Our health and well-being of our body should be set in tune with God.  The state of our health should not be a hindrance to serve God.  Unhealthy food choices will create health complication in the latter days of your life.  This will hinder you from serving God to your fullest ability. Eating the right portion of a good balanced nutritious meal, staying active, and drinking water to nourish your body will bring glory to God by being good stewards of the body we are given.  As the verse indicates whatever you eat or drink let it sanctify Christ in you.

  1. Temptations and Self-control

“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”  – 1 Corinthians 10:13-14

“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” – Proverbs 25:28

We all go through temptation.  We are tempted by our cravings for certain food that may not be good for our bodies.  We were created in the image of Christ, as our bodies belong to Christ, we must also eat food that will bring nourishment to our bodies.  When you find yourself tempted to eat certain foods, seek God.  He can help you overcome in the areas your struggling with.  God gives us the will power to overcome certain food or eating habit that we can’t break free from.  Once you submit yourselves to God and gain self-control you can be free from falling into temptation.  God gives you a way out of temptation, if you allow Him to minister.  Don’t starve or over eat yourself as it can lead to major complications such as anorexia and obesity.  Anorexia and obesity have become a common illness in our society.  The media has become a driving force behind anorexia by portraying a certain image that a woman should look like. Sadly, many young women get trapped in a false image and find themselves trapped in body they dislike. You were created just as you are, we just need to learn how to maintain good health rather than trying to become someone the media portrays us to be. In the social realm of society, women with skinny figures are idolized more than women with a normal or average figure.  The bible clearly warns us not to conform the patterns of the world, as it leads you to eternal destruction.  First and foremost, we need to be comfortable in our own bodies and not be tempted to seek out how the world views the woman’s body.  God created you to be beautiful without flaws.  So therefore, we need to set our mind on our Christ and on things above.  Allow God to deal with every struggle of temptation and set your mind to be self-controlled in your eating habits.

  1. Active lifestyle

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We are created by God to steward his will on earth. His plan is for us to live a long, healthy life. It’s important that we take good care of our bodies by exercising and getting involved in extracurricular activities. Physical exercise helps us maintain good health and create good body functions.  Train your body and exercise regularly.  Take time to do the things you enjoy with friends.  To create better results, get an accountability partner that will motivate you.  Exercise benefits every aspect of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.  Your potential to worship Christ is not limited but rather extended to greater heights and capacity.  The more your life is nourished with healthy food and exercise you will have more energy to do things you desire to do for God. Exercise can be as simple as going for a walk, running, biking, dancing and whatever else interests you.

The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. – Psalm 32:8

In conclusion, there are times you will want to give up working for your health. It seems impossible to lose weight, to have more energy or simply to have more time to do the things you would like to.   God is interested in every aspect of your life, which definitely includes your health wellbeing.  Just as a mother who looks out for her children, so does our Heavenly Father.  Therefore, seek out His strength and draw into His biblical truths to help you achieve a better life.  This will be your source of encouragement.  As the world puts high importance on small body figures, you do not need to conform to that pattern.  Rather seek and focus on becoming healthy.  God has entrusted you on earth with your body, it’s your duty to take care of it.  The bible is your only source and is a user manual for your body and life struggles. God desires to see you to be the woman He created you to be, do not allow your health to be a hindrance!  Get healthy and stay active!
